The Nahant Fire Department will provide and install battery-operated photoelectric smoke detectors and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors for free to any resident in Nahant. We are not able to replace hardwired smoke/CO detectors.
The Get Alarmed Nahant program was developed in response to a tragedy in Nahant that took the lives of three residents. In response, the Nahant American Legion Post 215 donated funds to offer free carbon monoxide detectors to any Nahant resident. The Nahant Board of Selectmen and Town Administrator Tony Barletta then established a fund called “The Benson Fund” and matched the Legion Post 215 donation. This fund will allow the Nahant Fire Department to purchase and install detectors for any Nahant resident in need.
The Nahant Fire Department has also partnered with the American Red Cross of Massachusetts to expand the program. The American Red Cross will provide the Nahant Fire Department with battery-operated smoke and CO detectors, along with home safety information. Additionally, if there is a resident who is hearing impaired, the American Red Cross will provide strobe lights and a bed shaker device that is linked to the smoke detector. Nahant Fire Department will install and set up these devices as well.
Between the partnership with the American Red Cross and the Benson Fund, the Nahant Fire Department will be able to provide complete smoke and carbon monoxide detection to Nahant
residences.
Residents can sign up for the Get Alarmed Nahant program by calling (781)581-0079 Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., or by emailing Chief Antrim at aantrim@nahantfire.org.
